One of the serious obstacles to understanding Gender Dysphoria is that it is an unimaginable and inconceivable problem to those who do not have it. This distinguishes it from other forms of human suffering, for which it is much easier to generate empathy and sympathy.

This report was commissioned by Brighton and Hove City NHS Primary Care Trust (PCT), through Spectrum, the Brighton and Hove Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum.

The report pulls no punches in criticising the Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic (GIC), to which the PCT currently refers those undergoing gender transition. Clients and local GPs are united in their criticisms of the expensive service provided by Charing Cross.

The Spectrum reports recommends that instead of sending patients on expensive trips to an unsatisfactory service in London, the Primary Care Trust should set up its own local service for the many trans people living in the Brighton and Hove area.
