Parliamentary questions

Written answers : Department of Health

26th February 2007

Lorely Burt MP (libDem, Solihull) asked the Minister what the impact of the new definition of “mental disorder” contained within the Bill would be on trans people and LGB people. The debates surrounding the Bill’s revised definition have raised the potential for trans people to be included within the scope of the proposed Act simply for being trans rather than having any mental disorder requiring psychiatric intervention.

Rosie Winterton’s reply seems to imply that there is no intent to include trans people within the remit simply for being trans, though it might imply that it is simply not a concern which they believe needs to be addressed. A more complete answer would have helped clear up an obvious concern of trans people.

Lorely Burt: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment her Department has made of the potential impact of the Mental Health Bill on (a) transgender people and (b) lesbian, gay and bisexual people. [120743]

Ms Rosie Winterton: Our assessment is that the Mental Health Bill will have no disproportionate impact on transgender, lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
