Mookey’s Story — A sensitive and informative documentary about the transition of a young FtM Chinese-American college student embarking on transition. Made in San Francisco for “New American Media” by Carolyn Goosen, this film is recommended viewing for those who would like to learn about the transition issues of young people in general and trans men in particular.
We see 24 year old Mookey from day one of his Testosterone therapy, self-administering the drug with the close support of his friends. We meet his parents, and see how they are coping differently from one-another with a very real type of grief mixed with acceptance. Over the course of 20 weeks we see the changes in Mookey’s body — the dramatic pitch change of his voice; the redistribution of fat on his torso. And we see a very practical side of the solutions developed to enable trans men to pee standing up, and hear why that’s so important from a practical perspective.
